Visit to Wellington School Chapel August 2026
The Local History Group were treated to a talk and tour of Wellington School Chapel given by James Bradnock who related it's history whilst we sat in it’s pews surrounded by beautiful artisanal craftmanship. Built in the 1920s, the inner furnishings were mostly crafted by the headmaster, George Corner, and his workforce of pupils ; shaping the oak on a router and finished by F. J. Hunt, the quality of whose wood carving is outstanding. All were awed by the blue and gold ceiling and medieval/perpendicular style panels, friezes and gallery. It has an air of the Arts and Crafts movement and the clear windows let in maximum light to show it off to perfection. We were able to purchase a booklet of the history written by James as a lovely momento of our visit.
I have posted the photos I took below which I hope will be a nice reminder of the day and also a glimpse for other members who were unable to join us. I photographed the panels showing all of the 'old boys' who fell in WW1 and in wars since in case you wanted to re-visit those to study more closely by clicking on a picture to enlarge it.
