Some things our groups get up to
What are "Interest Groups"?
Interest Groups are the beating heart of our u3a where you can meet with like-minded folk to share ideas and enjoy good company whilst learning from each other.
A group on any subject can be formed and led by one or more of the members within that group, who are all volunteers and known as "convenors". Each group sets it’s own agenda and works at it’s own comfortable pace. There is usually an emphasis on participation, sharing and learning from each other's skills and experiences.
Depending on the group's size and subject, they may meet in a member's home, a rented venue, a local cafe or wherever suits the type of group.
Suggestions for new groups are always welcome and support is available to get you started. If you have any questions about starting a group of your own please contact the Group Co-ordinator by email.
Group convenors are the heroes of our u3a and we are all very grateful for the time and commitment they give.
How do I join a group?
You will need to be a full member, having paid your subscription, to participate in group meetings or activities in order to comply with the u3a insurance but there is an opportunity to have a "taster session" before you commit to joining us.
If you would like more information about joining any of our current groups please get in touch via the contacts page. You can contact any of the group leaders by email after opening the relevant group page in the list below. Or alternatively you can talk to any committee member at a monthly meeting or drop your contact details, along with the group/s you are interested in, into the Suggestion Box near the sign-in table.
If any group becomes "full" a waiting list is then set up and another group formed if necessary.
What are the costs?
There is no charge to belong to a group but if any group meets outside of a private home and in a rented venue there is a standard charge of £1 per person per session, (plus extra for refreshments if available and needed)This is a contribution towards the rental cost which is subsidised by our u3a funds. If a meeting is held at a member’s home there may be a small charge for refreshments by agreement.

Would you like to contribute to our community even though you may not have much spare time or maybe you have lots of spare time and would like to find out how you can help your u3a? Please take a look here to find out how in this new group. All abilities welcome.

Potential New Groups
If you have a particular skill or passion for a subject you can start a group of your own with the support of our u3a community. You only need 2 or 3 members to start a group, so why not give it a try? You can begin by meeting in each other’s homes, then as the group grows you can move to a local rented venue which can be subsidised with permission from our committee.
Some members have requested the following groups to be available but they need help to get started. If you feel you would like to join any of these and/or can offer to help then please get in touch by sending an email to the Group Co-ordinator
- A second Book Group
- Music Group
- Philosophy / Discussion Group
- Do you remember when? (a trip down memory lane discussion group)
- Pilates or yoga
- Film (cinema visits)
- Petanque
- Lunch club

We have lots of members on the list for the new Petanque group but still waiting for a leader or convenor to volunteer before the group can launch. If you have put your name on this list please consider becoming the convenor - support will be given to anyone who would be willing to do this.
A convenor is not a teacher or 'boss' but is often just someone who can be the main contact for a group, may need to hire a venue and keep members informed about group activities etc.
